Our hotel, The Movenpick is new, modern and wonderful...we recommend it highly. The views from our room are breathtaking.
We took a long walk and ended up at the Tinguely fountain.
Then we practiced riding the tram (you get a Basel card free from the hotel that allows you to ride the tram for free and get discounts at museums.)

Dinner, a five minute walk from the hotel, was a cozy Swiss restaurant with cheese fondue (with gluten-free bread), veal cordon bleu, and roasted potatoes with cheese and ham. When I made the reservation I learned that it was Allen's birthday. Allen was our waiter. As typical loud Americans, we sang him Happy Birthday in 3 part harmony. Allen brought us some lemoncello as a surprise.
Dinner was a delight in every way.

We were a little tipsy after dinner but stumbled our way to a chocolate shop for some Swiss chocolate to enjoy with a night cap back at the hotel. We declare Day 1 a success!!
